Addiction

As my first blog post I wanted to speak about addiction. This is our new unit we are starting in contemporary topics of health. Addiction has been growing in the US for many years and as educators it is part of our job to educate these children on addiction and how it can affect someones life. Addiction is a compulsive, persistent, dependence on a substance or a behavior, including mood altering behaviors or activities. Addiction has four common symptoms,  compulsion (characterized by obsession), denial, loss of control, and negative consequences. How does addiction start you may ask. It can start by just simply having access to it, as a habit, without awareness, or nurturing during avoidance. Lastly, we learned that last year more people age 44 and under died of drug overdoses than any other cause in many parts of Pennsylvania and Ohio. This fact shows that the drug mortality rate is growing because of how easy it is for people to get a hold of it.

  1. Maya, I love the information that you expressed on addiction. I had no idea the addiction has four major symptoms. That was very interesting for me to learn. Your post also opened my eyes to the fact that people under the age of 44 die of drug overdoses more than any other cause in Pennsylvania and Ohio. All of this was super interesting for me to learn based off of your blog post and I cannot wait for more post.

  2. Educating individuals about addiction is crucial in todays' world. Because as you said it's very easy for people to get a hold of drugs these days. Personally, I have never dealt with anyone suffering from addiction. Reading about all the behavioral aspects and symptoms is definitely a learning moment for me. Very nicely said!

  3. Addiction is a big issue especially in our generation. This post is very important due to the ideas it talks about such as the symptoms especially lose of control. Lose of control can create the ideology that other drugs aren't that bad such as certain drugs being considered gateway drugs. It also surprises me that people 44 and under are the main contributors to overdose deaths. The idea of access is also important because access allows people to easily get their hands on something that could affect their life later down the line.

  4. I love this information you are sharing. Being in college we see daily people that are affected by addiction. Even something seemingly simple like a vape can turn into something that affects every moment of their day and revolves it around getting a quick 'buzz'. I hope that more people can learn about the harmful affects and try their best to break the cycle and not have a dependency on a harmful chemical or other substances.

  5. Thanks for talking about this, Maya. It is so important to start bringing the issue to light because it will affect our lives very greatly, especially as physical educators. It is important for us to be educated on the topic so that we can help our students stay on the right path as much as possible.

  6. This is a very important topic to talk and learn about. Addiction is a huge issue that continues to become more common. In college especially is a time in someone's life that they start to experiment with different substances which is what leads to addictions. Teaching college students everything about addictions and all of the things that go along with it are a great way to attempt to prevent students from starting these experiments with substances. Hopefully we can educate as many people as possible about addiction so that the upward trend of addiction begins to go down.
